Check out this post for gift ideas for 1 year olds that are Montessori-inspired!
As parents, we’re always on the lookout for toys that not only entertain our little ones but also foster their development and growth. My second child turns one year old this month so I’ve been on the lookout for something out of the ordinary. This is where Montessori-inspired toys shine. Rooted in the philosophy of Maria Montessori, these toys are designed to encourage independence, creativity, and cognitive skills from a young age. If you have a curious 1-year-old at home, here are some Montessori-inspired toy ideas that will captivate their interest and aid their development. Side note: they’re less likely to annoy with repetitive noise.

1. Shape Sorter
A classic Montessori toy, a wooden shape sorter provides endless entertainment while also honing your child’s hand-eye coordination and problem-solving skills. Look for one with simple shapes and large pieces that are easy for little hands to grasp.
2. Stacking Rings
Stacking rings not only enhance fine motor skills but also introduce concepts like size and spatial awareness. Opt for rings made of natural materials like wood and ensure they are smooth and safe for your child to handle.
3. Nesting Blocks
Nesting blocks are perfect for encouraging exploration and experimentation. Your little one will love stacking them up and knocking them down while also learning about size, balance, and sequencing.
4. Sensory Balls
A favorite of both my baby and my preschooler. Soft, textured balls are fantastic for sensory exploration. Choose balls with different textures, colors, and sizes to stimulate your child’s senses and encourage tactile development.
5. Musical Instruments
Introduce your child to the joy of music with simple instruments like a xylophone, tambourine, or maracas. Not only do they provide auditory stimulation, but they also promote rhythm and coordination.
6. Open-ended Toys
Toys that can be used in multiple ways, such as wooden blocks, scarves, or play silks, are essential in Montessori philosophy. They encourage imaginative play and creativity, allowing your child to explore their interests and capabilities freely.
7. Puzzles with Knobs
Puzzles with knobs are ideal for little hands learning to grasp and manipulate objects. Start with puzzles featuring familiar objects or animals to capture your child’s interest and keep them engaged.
8. Books
A favorite in our house! Board books with clear, realistic images are perfect for introducing your child to the world around them. Choose books with sturdy pages that can withstand enthusiastic page-turning and exploring. Side note: ideally Montessori-inspired books should have realistic pictures in them, however I can’t help myself and tend to gravitate towards books with beautiful illustrations
9. Practical Life Toys
Montessori emphasizes the importance of practical life skills from an early age. Consider toys like child-sized brooms, dustpans, or watering cans that allow your little one to mimic everyday activities and develop independence. Although one year old might seem too young for these toys-I’ve noticed my one year old lighting up with joy whenever I get the vacuum cleaner out. They enjoy helping in their own way.
By incorporating Montessori-inspired toys into your 1-year-old’s playtime, you’re not just providing entertainment—you’re laying the foundation for a lifetime of learning and growth. These toys stimulate curiosity, foster independence, and promote holistic development, making them invaluable additions to any child’s toy collection.
